Volume 9 continues the discussion in Volume 8 of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook by focussing on African entrepreneurship. Volume 8 of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook considered in detail the marginalisation of Africa with regard to international trade, international investment, international technology flows, and international firm co-operation. It was made clear in Volume 8 that the marginalisation is the outcome of historical factors, especially of the colonial period, but also of the policies pursued after independence. Africa’s marginalisation is also the result of highly inadequate economic policies and reforms that failed to stimulate internationally competitive production of goods and services in primary production, in manufacturing and in services.
Volume 9 is now continuing the discussion by focussing on the central theme of African entrepreneurship development. African Entrepreneurship has to be studied more carefully now, in general terms but also related to sectors, countries and gender. African Entrepreneurship is key for all attempts to stimulate production and exports as all activities will depend on a vivid African entrepreneurial class that is mobilising labour and resources of the countries in Africa. In order to study all the relevant aspects in detail, the Research Group on African development Perspectives has decided to involve leading African and international researchers, practitioners and entrepreneurs to contribute to this task as guest editors, as authors, and as contributors of statements, reports and evaluations.
The Units of Volume 9 is compiled and completely edited by Guest Editors and Editors from the Research Group on African Development Perspectives in Bremen. Each Unit comprises 4-9 contributions and is introduced by the Guest Editor or an Editor from the Research Group on African Development Perspectives in Bremen.
